Special Needs Program

Shelter Program for Residents with Medical or Physical Conditions who Require Assistance During an Emergency

The Polk County Special Needs Program is designed to provide sheltering at specific locations for clients with medical or physical conditions who require assistance during an emergency. The program also provides transportation to shelters for those unable to evacuate on their own. Pre-registration in the program is preferred by contacting Emergency Management at (863) 534-5600. Persons with medical equipment that require electrical power or are oxygen dependant are assigned to these specially designated Special Needs Shelters.

Is It Right For You?

It's important that ALL residents have an evacuation plan in place. Persons who are considered particularly vulnerable to these threats are those that:

* Live in mobile homes

* Live in low areas

* Have special needs (especially those dependent on electricity-operated medical/life support equipment)

* Live alone and need transportation

The Special Needs Program is designed for people who have no other transportation or shelter options and need local government assistance.

* Pre-determine your evacuation destination such as a friend's house or relative's house, motel/hotel or emergency shelter.

* Arrange for your specific special needs and care at your predetermined destination (e.g., medication, health care or diet, etc.)

* Arrange for your transportation needs with a neighbor, friend, relative, church or volunteer organization.

* If you cannot secure transportation and/or require special needs and care, and have no other alternative, register with the Special Needs Program of the Polk County Emergency Management Division by calling (863) 534-6000.
