Meter Tampering not worth the risk in terms of personal safety or cost!
In today’s economy, people are looking for ways to make ends meet. But meter tampering is not worth the deadly and costly risk to people and their families. And the extra costs caused by “meter cheaters” can possibly affect electric rates in the future.
The numbers of suspected meter tampering in Lakeland Electric’s service area have increased as the economy has declined- and with this rise, the employee time dedicated to addressing meter tampering has also increased. In 2009, Lakeland Electric investigated or re-checked 7,205 meters for possible tampering averaging approximately 600 meters per month. It may seem that stealing electricity is a victimless crime, but in fact, all customers could share in the cost. Lakeland Electric is detecting and seeking restitution for thefts at the meter. We aggressively investigate all causes of meter tampering, recover as much revenue as possible, and press criminal charges when appropriate. Florida statute 812.14 states “Whoever is found in a civil action to have violated the provisions of this section is liable to the utility involved in an amount equal to 3 times the amount of services unlawfully obtained or $1,000, whichever is greater.”
Efforts to reduce the costs resulting from this illegal activity are key, but more importantly, safety is at stake. Bypassing the meter with methods used to steal electricity put those committing the theft, their families, Lakeland Electric employees and innocent bystanders in grave danger. Meters are connected to the electric lines that bring power into homes and even Lakeland Electric technicians who are trained in meters and other electrical equipment are required to wear special safety gear and follow specific safety procedures. When an untrained person tampers with an electric meter, it can be life threatening. Unauthorized alterations of the meter can lead to a fire, explosion or electrocution.
Lakeland Electric field employees are trained to look for suspicious circumstances, and as a Lakeland Electric customer, you can help. Report any case of potential meter theft by calling 863-834-9535.
