The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) awarded 18 of its utility members for their continued commitment to safe work practices during the past year.
For the past 26 years, FMEA has recognized the efforts of Florida’s municipally owned utilities to stress worker safety as the No. 1 priority. Utilities are placed into categories according to their total man-hours worked, and rewarded for the most incident-free records. The incidence rate used to judge utilities was based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses compared to the total number of worker-hours during 2013, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
The recognition reflects FMEA member’s commitment to protecting workers’ safety, while also ensuring reliable electric service to the customers. In an industry where serious injuries and fatalities are inherent, safety training is the best line of defense in preventing accidents and saving lives.
Awards were presented on March 29th at the FMEA Annual Safety and Florida Lineman Competition Awards banquet in Ocala. The banquet was the culmination of a two-day event that included technical skills training and the annual Florida Lineman Competition.

Ocala Electric Utility – 1st place
New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission – 3rd place
Keys Energy Services – 2nd place
Category D (300,000-999,999 man-hours):
Category E (1,000,000-2,499,999 man-hours):
Category G (2,500,000-greater man-hours):

Lakeland Electric’s website has recently undergone a facelift. The new site features an eServices Portal that allows users to conduct a number of business functions and monitor usage from any convenient location.

Customers who sign-up for eServices can review their utility bill details and pay online. They can view their current statement, previous balance and transaction history. Users can check their monthly carbon footprint and conduct business like disconnect service, transfer service to another address and for our winter visitors, they can restart their service all online.
Because of the integration with smart meters, eService users can view consumption (kWh and estimated dollar levels) at monthly, daily and hourly intervals. Lakeland Electric customers can also enroll in a new notification program so they can be alerted if there is an outage in the area. The notifications can be received through texts, email, voice message (IVR) and can be received on multiple devices.
